What is a branch (odštěpný závod) and who most often sets one up in the Czech Republic?

A branch is an establishment of a foreign parent company. It has its own finances and is run by different management from the head company. A branch may have a different name from the parent company, it has no legal personality of its own and it keeps separate accounts. Setting up a branch is most often used by banks, insurers and telecoms operators, but also by smaller business entities.

The branch is led by the so-called head of the branch (vedoucí odštěpného závodu)

The head is authorised to act in all matters relating to the branch. In doing so they act as a representative of the founder; they are therefore not a separate statutory body. The head is entered in the Commercial Register (obchodní rejstřík).
