How does permanent residence differ from your actual home?

Permanent residence and your actual home are two different concepts that are often confused.

• Permanent residence is the administrative address recorded on your ID card, which the state uses to communicate with citizens and to keep registers.
• Your home, by contrast, is the place where you actually live and spend most of your time.

These two concepts therefore need not necessarily be identical – you can have your permanent residence at your parents' address and actually live in sublet accommodation at the other end of the country, or travel the world without a permanent place to live. The law does not require you to actually live at the permanent residence address.

It does, however, require you to have the property owner's consent to registering your permanent residence there. Thanks to this, you can even have it at an address where you do not live – for example at the service provider's address. The important thing is that it is a valid address recognised by the state for all official communication.
