What is the difference between a data box for an individual, a self-employed person and a company?

The basic difference between the types of data box lies in the role in which you communicate with the state. Each type of box has its own ID and its own rules for delivery.

• Data box of an individual – non-business: For them it is voluntary; it is used for handling private matters, such as applying for a benefit, renewing a driving licence or communicating with the municipality.
• Data box of a self-employed individual – OSVČ: It is mandatory for every self-employed person. It is used exclusively for communication relating to your business (taxes, insurance, etc.).
• Data box of a legal entity – a company: It belongs to the company (e.g. an s.r.o.) and its content, which belongs to the company, is managed by its statutory body (the managing director, jednatel) or an authorised person.

Yes, and for entrepreneurs it is even the usual situation. If you are self-employed (OSVČ) and also set up a box as a private individual, you will have two separate box IDs. However, you can log in to both under a single Citizen Identity (Identita občana) (e.g. via Bank iD), where you then simply switch in the menu to the box you want to work in.

The state delivers documents where they belong. For example:

• A speeding fine incurred in a private car should arrive in your data box as an individual (if you have one).
• A request from the tax office regarding your VAT will always arrive in the box of the entrepreneur (OSVČ).

If, as a self-employed person, you do not have a separate box set up as a non-business individual, the authorities will continue to send you private documents (e.g. from the land registry) on paper by post or to your OSVČ box (if the law allows it in the given matter). Having both boxes is therefore the way to maximum clarity and peace of mind.
